Our History
The company known as KT & ET Smith P/L was originally formed by Kenneth Thomas Smith and Edna May Smith in 1955, focusing on new and used truck sales. In those days, trucks were predominantly ex Government used trucks from SEC (State Electricity Commission), PMG (known as Telecom and Telstra) and shire and council used trucks from across Victoria.
As the business grew, and on the back of farming booms, a specialist shed was established and team of welders employed to build specialised tipping trays and grain bins. A wrecking (parts) yard was also introduced.
At this time, the business was located in Latrobe Street, Ballarat, at a site opposite the Ballarat Sale Yards, a location ideal for servicing the growing farm truck trade.
At the age of 15, Robert Smith joined the business as an apprentice mechanic and has since been with the company for 40 years. The premised have changed over the years, and the name was also changed to Smiths Trucks Pty Ltd when Robert and Vikki took over the company.
Robert and Vikki's sons, Nathan and Clinton, also joined the growing truck sales business, Nathan commencing in 1998 and Clinton in 2001. Over many years in the industry Smiths Truck has formed strong relationships, enabling our company to constantly have the best new and used trucks available coming through our system with all stock valued and purchased by either Robert, Nathan or Clinton.
Our new trucks and used trucks are sourced from all over Australia and still come with the same service that was introduced those many years ago including our warranty, which dates back to 1955.
